You will learn to model a kitchen design from one of my own design projects (see image above) and you can then use what you learn to design a kitchen for your own home or for client projects. Designing in 3D
Once my ideas are created in SketchUp I then bring these in to Layout and create a professional concept to present to the client alongside samples and materials I may have collected from suppliers for discussion. You can see an example of this sort of concept document in the right hand image below. Proper lighting can transform a space, turning a drab room into a cozy haven or a dull office into an inspiring workspace. In SketchUp, you can play around with light sources, adjusting their intensity and direction. Using 3D models, Isolina can easily communicate her needs regarding lighting, plumbing, and space. If she needs a window or door to be moved, SketchUp is the perfect communication tool for her to collaborate with architects. Plus I've had builders tell me that my drawings are some of the most detailed and helpful that they've every worked from (critical for avoiding mistakes during a build!). By the end of the module you will be able to space plan a kitchen, bathroom, joinery (millwork) and furniture in 2D. You will also learn how to add dimensions and export your floor plan in PDF. In Module 3 you will learn how to furnish and space plan your 2D model including how to move and scale 2D objects from the 3D warehouse. You will also learn how to apply textures to create interest and clarity in your model (e.g. flooring and other textures). Along with being able to create full custom designs, inside SketchUp there is an extensive database of user-created models (called the 3D warehouse) that are available for download.

Once the concept has been signed off it is time to start designing everything in more detail. So this is where I will draw the cabinetry up and show all the intricate design details. Most people don’t realise what is possible with SketchUp and how much you can achieve with just one piece of design software. With each update, new features are added; existing ones are improved, and some become obsolete. Consequently, being on top of these changes ensures you’re always ahead of the curve. Consequently, these are the magic spells of the SketchUp world.

Isolina can pull up models from client projects that are years old and instantly jump into the new idea the client has in mind because she’s already built an accurate working foundation. When Isolina began her interior design business in San Francisco, she found a new community of design-build professionals to collaborate with. Working with new people and different design sensibilities was exciting but also challenging when they didn’t share the same educational and cultural background. SketchUp made it easy for her to speak to her collaborators in the universal language of 3D. The course videos and activities should take you around 2-3 hours to complete for each module. But if you want to start to improve your SketchUp skills I suggest you allocated a few more hours to just play around and practice in SketchUp.
And in design, shadows can be both your best friend and your worst enemy. Optimizing shadows in SketchUp ensures that your designs look as realistic as possible. After all, you wouldn’t want your client’s dreamy sunlit room to look like it’s under a perpetual eclipse. Creating detailed room layouts is like sketching the skeleton of your design. Remember, a few inches off in SketchUp could mean a sofa that doesn’t fit in real life. And trust me, no one wants to be the designer who has to explain that hiccup.
